Middlemore Hospital Cath Lab & Renal Unit

Middlemore Hospital Cath Lab & Renal Unit

Project Summary

The project consisted of a two-level addition to the existing Scott building, in which the design included reinforced concrete slab on grade, steel structure, precast concrete panels, and suspended comm floor.  Internal refurbishment of the existing dialysis and Catheter laboratory, which is broken up into 16 stages to ensure the hospital can remain fully operational throughout the build period.

The project was to provide an additional Cardiac Catheter Laboratory to achieve enabling the service to provide more reliable, equitable, and timely access to cardiac interventions for the current and future population; Support uplift in performance to meet population growth and targeted procedure intervention rates and reduced waiting time; and enabling us to locally deliver some of the elective procedures that are currently outsourced, improving the experience of care and local equity of access for our residents.

The project will also provide additional space to the existing Dialysis Unit by extending the building footprint. The additional space is to allow for Haemodialysis for all patients in beds (as opposed to chairs); Achieve an additional 6x bed capacity; Improve circulation space and improve Infection Prevention and Control.

The project is a key strategic project for CMDHB which will result in significant improvements to patient experience and care available in the region. The Project is challenging due to the operational environment and integration of the construction with existing facilities – successful delivery will be a substantial acknowledgement of contractors who can work in this environment.
